Australia School Holidays

Find the correct school calendar for your state or territory.

Dates are set by each state and territory

Australia does not have one national school-holiday calendar. Use the education department calendar for the state or territory where the student attends school and confirm school-specific days before booking travel or care.

Why Australian school holidays differ by state

Each state and territory publishes its own government school calendar, so Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory do not always break at the same time. The differences may only be a few days, but that is enough to matter for flights, accommodation, interstate visits and childcare.

What counts as a school holiday

The main breaks normally sit between the four school terms, with a longer summer holiday around December and January. Student-free days, local holidays and school development days can create extra non-attendance days that are not part of the standard holiday block. If you need to know whether a particular child is expected at school, check the school's own calendar as well as the state dates.

Planning travel and annual leave

Families can use the state calendar to book leave, arrange camps, plan road trips or coordinate visits with relatives. If you are travelling interstate, compare both states because one jurisdiction may still be in term while another has already begun holidays. That difference can affect traffic, accommodation demand and the availability of family members.

Childcare and shared-care arrangements

Holiday care programs and shared-care schedules often depend on the exact first and last non-school days. Write the dates into a family calendar early, then add any pupil-free days once the school publishes them. For formal parenting arrangements, use the definition and dates required by the relevant agreement or order rather than assuming a generic state calendar will settle every detail.

Government, Catholic and independent schools

Government calendars are a strong reference point, but non-government schools can vary. Before paying for travel, care or events, confirm the dates with the actual school. This page is intended to get you to the correct jurisdiction and help you know what to verify, not to replace the current school notice.
