The United States does not have one national school-holiday calendar. Use the calendar published by the relevant district or school.
School calendars in the United States are usually decided by local districts, states and individual schools rather than the federal government. That means there is no single nationwide date for spring break, summer vacation or the first day back. Two neighbouring districts can publish different breaks, and private or charter schools may follow another calendar again.
Most families look for Thanksgiving break, winter break, spring break and the long summer vacation, but many districts also schedule fall break, teacher workdays, conference days and short closures around public holidays. Those smaller non-attendance days can create childcare gaps even when the main holiday blocks are already in your calendar.
Use the district calendar when arranging camps, annual leave, flights, road trips, shared-care schedules or visits with relatives. If children attend different schools, compare both calendars. A spring break that differs by one week can completely change whether siblings or cousins are free at the same time.
Some districts reserve days for snow or emergency closures, while others extend the school year if too many instructional days are lost. If you plan travel immediately after the published final day, check the calendar again closer to the date. A schedule downloaded months earlier may no longer reflect make-up days added later.
Federal holidays do not automatically tell you whether a school is open, and a statewide calendar may still be too broad. Find the student's district or school, read its current calendar and confirm unusual dates directly when the cost of being wrong is high.
